How a laptop lets you control your entire lifeLaptop Technology continues to evolve at a rapid rate and can be slightly overwhelming to some people. Many consumers who are of a certain age, around 35 or over, and who have never worked in a business or office environment, could be forgiven for feeling a little afraid of modern computing technologies – a fear known in the business as technophobia. There is nothing to fear however, as a modern laptop is one of the simplest devices to use that there is. Of course it can be used for many more complex functions or activities, but if you want something which is an attractive piece of kit which complements a home and allows you to check your email and do some online shopping from the comfort of your armchair, then you can’t go far wrong with a home laptop. Portable computers today are triumphs of both form and function, sleek and slimline lightweight boxes which allow you to carry out all the mundane tasks like paying bills or ordering the groceries as well as expanding your multimedia skills to edit holiday photos or redesign the look and feel of your home with the right software. The modern range of laptops complement the other technological devices found in today’s typical home such as iPods, digital cameras and iPhones, both in terms of looking stylish and being simple devices to operate. Many people choose the lightweight satellite laptop, weighing in at under 2 kilos as their device of choice for learning more about the online world. ![]() So what has changed in design terms? One of the most positive developments to have come from the information technology sector in recent years is the trend for having the laptop computer be the average user’s catch-all solution to modern living, complete with all its technological interaction. The progression of laptops from the clunky and clumsy devices of yesteryear into the sleek and lightweight models of today is as much of a contrast as iPods are to CD Discmans and modern mobile phones are to the enormous, heavyweight handsets which people struggled to carry around not so long ago. Today the average business laptop or other kind of portable PC fits in with the minimalist design of the modern home, complete with its wood floors, simple furniture and stylish blinds. Where a desktop computer can look unwieldy and out of place in a living room today, lightweight and slimline laptops complement a room’s look and feel perfectly. Tiny devices like a netbook are brilliant examples of how much the design of laptops has evolved – Netbooks are the latest in portable computing and weigh about as much as the average paperback book, meaning that they slip easily into a handbag or rucksack and are as good as invisible when not in use in the home. Wireless networking has also helped to add to the simplicity of Internet browsing at home via a laptop. No more cables all over the place for the kids to trip over. With laptops, browsing at home is a pleasure. ![]() Movies, music and more besides Technological evolution means miniaturisation. Long gone are the days when the average holidaymaker had to cart a huge and heavy 35mm camera on holiday with them, along with about a dozen rolls of film in a padded carry bag. Nowadays if you see a tourist carrying a black padded shoulder bag the chances are it holds a laptop computer and a tiny digital camera. Storage has become much cheaper in recent times, so a flash memory card – which contains thousands of times the storage space of the computer which sent the first mission to the moon – is ideal for keeping hundreds of holiday snaps on. Many tourists take a lightweight portable computer with them on holiday to transfer their photos off their camera and onto their computer each day so that they can edit them and also upload them to online galleries. Equally it is now not uncommon to see kids on holiday playing away on a gaming laptop. Laptops are now so simple to use and have such storage space to them, hundreds of gigabytes, which it is possible to take one’s entire music and movie collection with you wherever you go. Similarly, many people use their laptop computer as a tool for editing holiday movies, when still abroad or when they get home. It is a simple process to hook your digital camcorder up to your portable PC and then use one of a number of different software packages to edit your film down. Then why not upload your movie to YouTube and share it with your friends? ![]() So how about back-up? Many people who take the step of investing in their first laptop computer, or of upgrading an existing one, state that after-sales service and support along with warranty are some of the issues at the top of their agendas. They need not worry, since not just are the manufacturers of laptops thorough with the levels of support which they offer, but there are also hundreds and thousands of user groups and discussion forums all over the Internet which can help the user to learn a bit of trouble-shooting themselves. Manufacturer websites typically carry in-depth laptop support sections where the average user can find pretty much any answer to any query they might have. Websites will usually contain frequently asked question sections for minor trouble-shooting and contact details for getting in touch with the experts by email or by phone for more detailed problems. Many of the engineers who work on helpdesks are themselves obsessive geeks, the people who are the industry’s innovators who are always at the cutting edge of technology development – in short, if they can’t help you with any problem you might have with your laptop, nobody can! At the same time modern day laptops are backed up by extensive warranties, since manufacturers have realised that one way to ensure customer satisfaction on top of delivering a great product is to offer simple, effective warranties and easy to deal with post-sales service. Buying laptops is not just about quality and style these days, but also peace of mind. ![]() |
